Handhelds Impact K-12: The Technology Perspective

Abstract: Access remains the central challenge to using computing technology effectively in K-12 schools. However, with the emergence of low-cost and educationally appropriate handheld computing technologies, Cathie Norris and Elliot Soloway argue that every one of the approximately 55 million school children in the United States could have their own personal computer—tommorrow! They discuss why desktop and laptop computers are not what schools need, and why handheld technologies are more appropriate for the K-12 setting.
